Awards of Excellence 2008
The Awards of Excellence 2008 was run by Landscape Industries Association of WA. (LIAWA). In previous years the event was a combination of awards presented with the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) and Irrigation Australia (IA).
Seventeen members entered the Awards for 2008. Firms can enter multiple categories and there were eighty-two individual entries spread amongst the sixteen categories. New this year were categories for Residential Maintenance, Commercial Maintenance, Lighting Displays and Commercial Products and Services. In previous years there was one overall award. So that WA can best be represented in the National Awards run by ALIA, there are Residential and Commercial Awards of Excellence. Also new this year were Gold Awards and Silver Awards. This means that frms could be rewarded even if they didn't win the Category Award.
Judging was held in the frst two weeks of October 2008. All of the metropolitan entries were visited by a team of three judges with the "country jobs" having one judge due to logistical and budgetary constraints. Unfortunately there weren't any entries in the Commercial Products and Services Category and the judges were particularly tough on the Commercial and Government up to $300 000, so no awards there either. The standard of entries for the other categories was extremely high and especially so in the very contested Residential Design and Construction above $80 000.
