LIAWA Awards of Excellence 2012

LIAWA Awards are presented annually in recognition of great works by members in collaboration with non-members in the industry to design and install works that are unique, of great standards, or of sustainable value.

LIAWA's byline is "shaping the future of landscaping in WA" and that is what members of LIAWA endeavours to do. LIAWA Awards are presented to entrants who present design flair, show inplementation of recommended best practices, show good trade skills, and present quality works for publicity and training. These projects may also be showcased in future garden tours by state, national and international conference organisers.

LIAWA AWARDS 2011 - OVERALL WINNER (DESIGNER) - NEWFORMS LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

Multi-award winning company Newforms shows passion in shaping the landscaping industry with their creativity, lateral-thinking, and technological advancement in sustainable concepts.

Congratulations on their collaboration with Josh Byrne & Associates, in enabling the stakeholders to create a high profile civic space which uses cutting-age Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) techologies to minimise environmental impact.

Design innovation is a core part of Newforms' practice and the PGCMP Library and Community Centre project balances functionality, creative expression and education resulting in a unique, engaging space.

LIAWA AWARDS 2011 - OVERALL WINNER (CONTRACTOR) - DEEP GREEN LANDSCAPING

Deep Green Landscaping (DGL) is well-reputed company responsible for many of the recent rooftop gardens projects in Perth. As an popular installer in this niche market in WA, DGL will most likely continue to impress and convince stakeholders / investors/ architects to showcase more fine examples of rooftop gardens in the future.

Congratulations on the high standards of these gardens which enhance the quality of life for the tenants of office buildings and residents of apartments. Judges were impressed with the outstanding quality of finish. This evidence of installation work quality was best at Beachside Apartments, Leighton Beach.

A peaceful and relaxing garden which complements the home. All spaces are used to maximum capacity. The pond, which is teeming with fish and waterlilies, is a stunning centrepiece which benefits both interior and exterior living spaces.  A well-documented project resulting in a beautiful lifestyle garden.

A well-presented plan which was clear and detailed. The built in seat and water feature created an alcove which broke up the area effectively. The project is characterised by clean lines, resulting in a modern, attractive outdoor living space.

FINALIST - OUTSIDE IN LANDSCAPE MANAGEMENT

A very detailed project with great appeal. The materials selected co-ordinated well with the house. A very good level of design information resulted in a cool and inviting alfresco area and a dramatic water feature to be viewed from the interior of the house.

A dramatic hardscape which complements the home. The use of large grasstrees and the existing gum was well integrated. This project gives a great first impression. The changes in level were well resolved and clever use was made of porphyry cobbles to define areas at the front.

An adoption of the latest innovation in landscaping methods and technology in greywater and irrigation that will be a benchmark for state and national contractors. This landscape involved a range of elements which were all well handled – particularly the light box and steel angled fence. The front is a complex blend of materials and the hard and softscapes were both well excecuted. Overall a high standard of construction and installation shown.

The kids play area was beautiful with some great big fun musical equipment that were real attention grabbers.  Difficult site, great workmanship, planting was extremely well done considering the different conditions throughout the site. It all blended well and some great diversity of plants, mostly waterwise. The use of synthetic grass on shaded pathways beside the building and creating  a wave pattern with different heights. Fantastic use of knowledge to achieve food, water and permaculture methods in  domestic gardening. Apart from the greywater recycling and rainwater harvesting, evidence of original ideas for recycling including turning an old fridge into a worm farm, tree stumps creating magical effect for a cubby & sandpit area. Judges are taken in by so many sustainable features packed into a  backyard of approx 150sqm.

Ajit is industrious and a keen learner. Judges visited a site that Ajit worked on which included paving, acobble path and a limestone retaining wall. Ajit built the limestone blocks in moulds to keep within budget. Judges noted neat work on changes in levels, paving and blockwork. Excellent skills all around. Compliments to the lecturers and College of Innovation and Industry Skills for a great model student.

FINALIST - MARK FREDICI (CHALLENGERTAFE)

Mark displays leadership qualities, and ability to understand and implement concepts and is good-natured. Mark's lecturers is impressed with his great work attitude and have forwarded excellence references.

Josie is a fine example of youthful enthusiasm. Josie is motivated to learn more, try harder and strive for excellence. A great personality and a great team player. In her endeavour to gather as many skills as possible in the landscaping field, Josie will be a great contributor to the productivity of the company.

FINALIST - DAWID VAN SITTERT (LANDSCAPE DEVELOPMENT)

Dawid received great references from lecturers at ChallengerTAFE highlighting his neat and well-presented work, combined with a good manner that will take him far in the landscaping industry. Dawid shows a willingess to learn and produces great work for each project.
